88楼. Tom plunges into history: Daley makes the perfect splash to open Olympic pool
Boris Johnson described the Olympic Park's Aquatics Centre as 'a poem in concrete and steel', and distance swimmer David Davies believes it will be a 'mini Nou Camp' for his sport.
It has also been likened to a stingray, albeit one that has landed on a cardboard box. The similes and metaphors flowed at Wednesday official unveiling and nearly, for Lord Coe, so did the tears.
'I was quite emotional,' confessed the chairman of London 2012 organising committee, who had ushered in IOC president Jacques Rogge to inspect what will become one of the iconic structures of 2012.
89楼. It was, indeed, a day rich in pride and expectation, when the diving pool was inaugurated by Games poster boy Tom Daley and more One-Year-To-Go celebrations were held in Trafalgar Square.
It was also a day to remember that we are rather good at pageantry in this country, with the expectation that 12 months from now the 30th Olympiad will be delivered in seamless succession to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
90楼. We could overlook the fact that the Aquatics Centre is one of the few Olympic projects to have bust its budget. Most have come in on time and not exceeded planned costs, meaning fears that 2012 might be another Millennium Dome or Wembley fiasco have failed to materialise.
Nor did it seem appropriate to reflect on the unfortunate timing that sees the British team enduring a rotten world swimming championships in the same week their theatre of dreams is being unveiled.
The great and the good were out in force, none greater than Rogge, a sports administrator whom a visitor from Mars might confuse with the President of the United States, such is the bowing and scraping around him.
91楼. 'I have seen so many venues over the years and this is unique,' he pronounced as dozens of international media crews hung on his every word. Lord Coe reported the IOC president had been 'taken aback' by the 17,500-seater venue and was very impressed.
But, for all the VIPs and Daley's ceremonial dive, the first athletes in the water were Britain's synchronised swimming team, performing their routine. You could be pleased for them to have the honour, as few who participate next year will have worked with such discipline to perfect their craft.
Katy Skelton, a 23-year-old from Reading, was all excitement afterwards as she stood shivering poolside. 'It was an amazing experience to be the first ones in it,' she said, her head coated with the thick gelatine needed to keep the performers' hair immaculately in place.
She was especially delighted with the state-of-the-art sound system installed. 'Th

下一段 余下全文 95楼. Eyes of the country on Tom Daley today
(看这标题起得。。。整个国家都注视着D。。
)
TOM DALEY will have the eyes of the nation on him again today, just three days after competing in the World Championship final in China.
The city teenager has flown back from Asia after finishing fifth in Shanghai to help London mark the countdown to the 2012 Olympics.
96楼. It is exactly one year today to the opening ceremony of the first Olympic Games on British soil for 64 years. And the organising committee have arranged a day-long series of events to mark the occasion.
One of the events will see city diving star Daley become the first person to dive into the new Olympic pool as the Aquatics Centre is opened for the first time. Daley’s dive will be screened live via big screens in Trafalgar Square and broadcast around the world.
